Igor Savchenko

1962

Artist, photographer, conceptualist.

photographic practice Igor Savchenko is considered in the context of the phenomenon of the Minsk school of creative photography.

The work of Igor Savchenko is unique for Belarus: from the beginning of the 1990s to our time, the artist has consistently checked, destroyed and modified photography, renounced photography and returned to it again. His conceptual series "Invisible" can be presented as a program for the artist, where the rejection of the photographic image in favor of a narrative signature was most uncompromisingly reflected.

The creative path of the artist is difficult to associate with one genre or direction. Despite the fact that his appearance in the photographic field of Belarus took place in close connection with the activities of the Minsk school of creative photography, his professional evolution unfolded rather in personal coordinates. From 1998 to 2005, Igor Savchenko creates a number of projects using texts and mixed media, often using both texts and video and audio materials. The artist actively uses found photographs and archives, processing, cropping and transforming them. In the autumn of 2006, after a break of almost ten years, he returned to photographic practice, radically changing the vision of photography as a medium of fixing reality.
