Ilya Chashnik

Chashnik Ilya Grigorievich, artist, designer. While studying at the Vitebsk Folk Art School, he studied with El Lissitzky and Kazimir Malevich. One of Malevich's closest students, a consistent Suprematist. He was a member of UNOVIS ("Affirmative of the New Art"). Since 1920 - a member of the creative committee of UNOVIS.

Ilya Chashnik on Sundays attends the private School of Drawing and Painting by Yudel Pan, where El Lissitzky, Osip Zadkine, Marc Chagall and many other later outstanding artists studied before him.

1918

Sixteen-year-old Chashnik went to Moscow and enrolled in architectural workshops at the Second State Free Art Workshops, where Kazimir Malevich also taught. But when he heard that Marc Chagall had arrived in Vitebsk and transformed the school of his teacher Pan into a People's Art School, Chashnik returned to his native city and began to study with Chagall.

1919

He worked in Vitebsk in the workshop of graphics, printing and architecture under the direction of L. M. Lissitzky.

1923

Researcher of GINHUK. Stayed in GINHUK until the time of its closing.

1927-1928

Chashnik's sketches formed the basis for later painting works in Leningrad, designed by the architectural team.

He died in Leningrad at the age of 26 from peritonitis. His associates erected a monument on the grave of Ilya Grigorievich: a white wooden cube with a black square.
