Lev Leitman

1896 – 1974

Graphic artist, teacher, participant in the Great Patriotic War. Honored Artist of the BSSR.

He worked in easel graphics mainly in watercolor and gouache techniques. Among the artist’s works are landscapes, portraits, still lifes, thematic paintings on an industrial theme, and views of Vitebsk.

The works are in the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus, the Foundation of the Belarusian Union of Artists, and the Vitebsk Art Museum.

Lived and worked in Vitebsk and Minsk.

March 23, 1896

Born in Petrikov (Minsk province, Russian Empire, now a city in the Gomel region, Republic of Belarus) in the family of an employee, he soon moved with his parents to the city of Gorodok, Vitebsk province, where he spent his childhood and youth.

1913-1914

He received his art education at the Vitebsk school-workshop of Yudal Pen.

1916-1917

He studied in Odessa at the art school of Professor Yuli Bershadsky.

1917

Returned to Gorodok.

1917-1923

He worked as an art teacher in a high school, as a decorator at the People's House named after U.I. Lenin, and as head of an art studio.

1923

He moved to Vitebsk, where he began working as the manager of the Red Builder club. At the same time, he continued his studies in the workshop of Yudal Pen until 1926.

Since 1929

Participated in art exhibitions.

1931–1941

He taught at the Vitebsk Art School.

1937

He completed advanced training courses for artists at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture with Professor Semyon Abugov.

Since 1940

Member of the Union of Artists of the BSSR.

1941

He was appointed director of the Vitebsk Art School.

1941

Took part in a joint exhibition of works with A. Brother.

1941-1945

During the Great Patriotic War he served in the Soviet Army in a road construction battalion. After the war, Lev Leitman came to Minsk and took an active part in the organization of the Minsk Art School.

1947-1958

He combined creative work with the work of a teacher and head of the department at the Minsk Art School.

1956

Personal exhibition in Minsk.

1966

Personal exhibition in Minsk.

1967

Received the title of Honored Artist of the BSSR.

September 20, 1974

The artist died in Minsk.

The National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus hosted a personal exhibition of graphic and watercolor works by Lev Leitman, dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the artist’s birth.
