Artur Bartels

1818 – 1885

Poet-songwriter, satirist, cartoonist, illustrator, comedian, journalist. Participant of the Polish Uprising of 1863—1864.

In his songs, he ridiculed the shortcomings of modern Polish society, the carelessness of the nobility, and the card game. As a publicist, he wrote a number of articles on social and political topics. The author of satirical drawings, which were printed in the "Vilna Album" in 1858. The author accompanied his drawings with rhyming captions that mocked the habits of the nobility and small town gentry.

Bartels' work during the author's lifetime was very popular and was highly appreciated by such artists as Yusof Ignatsy Kraszewski, Boleslav Prus, Cyprian Kamil Norvid, Jan Matejko.

Lived and worked in Vilnius, Warsaw and Krakow.

Born in Vilna (Russian Empire, now Lithuania) in an aristocratic landowner family.

Educated in Warsaw, St. Petersburg and Paris. Lived in Riga and St. Petersburg. Then in his Polissya estate.

Gained wide popularity after moving to Warsaw.

1858

Albums "A man of high origin", "Neighbour's dinner"; the series "Pan Atanazy Skarupka the Progressive Man", "Pan Eugene", "The Miser" were published in the "Vilna Album".

1863—1864

Participated in the Polish uprising.

Around 1875

He settled on the territory of the Austrian Empire in Krakow, where he tried himself in journalism.

1878—1880

He published articles in the magazine "Łowiec", where he also posted his poem "Tydzień poleski".

December 23th, 1885

Died in Krakow.

1888

The first collection of Bartels' songs appeared in Krakow.

January 18th, 2012

An exhibition dedicated to Artur Bartels has opened at the State Art Gallery in Minsk.
