Chaim Soutine painted this portrait of Oscar Miestchaninoff ten years after he stayed at the sculptor's studio in Montparnasse. In the 1920s, Soutine was no longer dependent on his friend's hospitality. In 1929, he even signed a contract with Galerie Bernheim-Jeune.
