Mikhas Ramanyuk

1944 – 1997

Art critic, artist, professor of the Belarusian Academy of Arts, candidate of art history, ethnographer, ethnologist, lecturer, head of the department of history and theory of art, the largest researcher of the material culture of Belarusians of the 20th century.

He founded the magazine "Mastatsva Belarusi" and became its first editor-in-chief. He created stage costumes for the State Folk Choir and the State Dance Ensemble of Belarus. For his own money, he conducted dozens of ethnographic expeditions, the fruits of which were more than 130 reconstructions of traditional costumes of Belarusians. The archive of Mikhail Romanyuk contains more than 100 thousand pieces of unique ethnographic material collected by his own hands; travel diaries make up dozens of volumes. An important part of Mikhail Romanyuk's many years of creative work is articles and illustrations in encyclopedias: "Belarusian Soviet Encyclopedia", "Encyclopedia of Literature and Art of Belarus", "Ethnography of Belarus".

As a costume specialist, he created stage costumes for the National Academic Folk Choir of the Republic of Belarus named after G. I. Titovich, the State Dance Ensemble of the Republic of Belarus and some independent groups. He presented almost exactly authentic Belarusian costumes on the stage. He also acted as a consultant for many feature films of the film studio "Belarusfilm", helped in the creation of expositions of the Zaslavsky Museum of Folk Crafts and Crafts.
