Alexei Ivanov

1978

Artist and painter. One of the teachers at the Wostrau children's art studio.

In his geometrically precise and very specifically colorized paintings, the artist depicts the empty space of Minsk. In an attempt to understand the essence of the place, he strips the architecture of its decoration, numerous windows, and doors, leaving behind the very "body" of the city. At times, the subjects of his works are semi-abstract figures integrated into the urban landscape.

Lives and works in Minsk.

The artist on the image of Minsk in his works:

I have a dual relationship with Minsk. On the one hand, there's a feeling of closeness to the city, born from endless walks that have resulted in the development of my own mental map of the place. On the other hand, there's a sense of Minsk as a "sub-city," one that hasn't quite become a city or has lost that quality. A theme of architecture's "alienation" from people and from civilization in general has emerged. Minsk is called a "clean city." But sometimes this purity reaches the point of paradox, creating a feeling of sterility and emptiness. The city begins to lose its depth. It becomes purified, cold, and concrete. In my opinion, this is its very essence.
