Belarusian Government massively destroys the historical memorials. Their understanding of restoration results in changing ancient oak windows with cheap plastic and painting unique frescos with layers of vulgar pink color.
One of these old manors, abandoned state was bought by the pensioner. He decided to restore it with his own hands, preserving the historical identity. I decided to help him realize his dream. To resurrect one old manor, I projected with projector characters from early 20th century to its empty walls. This way I showed the contrast of luxury past and cultural decay of present, pointing out a problem of historical identity, which is lost in the process of destructive "restoration".
I have inhabited the photographs of Polish and Belarusian manors interiors of the beginning of 20th century with heroes living in the beginning of 20th century. The collage is aimed at bringing attention to barbarian methods of contemporary restoration, which is the result of Soviet Past, when churches were turned into dancing clubs, and ballrooms into animal farms.
Not only I have combined the interiors, but I have also constructed people - I have placed a head of an unknown villain over Kalinovski photograph, and a servant of a Polish king I turned into a noblewoman. And they are rushing to step off the walls to help us understand our past.
Part of project. Full project consist of 16-20 photos.
