Jafim Minin

1897 – 1937

Artist, graphic artist, teacher.

He worked mainly in the technique of woodcuts. The leading theme of creativity was the cityscapes of Vitebsk, he was also engaged in ex-libris.

The artist's works are in the State Museum of Fine Arts. Pushkin in Moscow, the Vitebsk Regional Museum of Local Lore and the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus in Minsk.

Lived and worked in Vitebsk.

Born in Vitebsk (Russian Empire, now the Republic of Belarus).

1913-1915

Studied at the Vitebsk Commercial School of V. Grekov.

1915-1918

Served in the army.

1918

He entered the Vitebsk Folk Art School under Yudel Pen, and was also a student of Solomon Yudovin.

1920-1921

He taught at the Vitebsk Art and Practical Institute.

September 23, 1923

Due to disagreement with the actions of the new leadership of the institute, together with Peng, Yudovin and a group of students, he made a collective statement of resignation and left the institute.

Since 1920

He began to work in the technique of woodcuts.

Until the end of the 1920s

He taught at the Vitebsk Jewish Pedagogical College.

From 1928

Began to participate in exhibitions.

November 1, 1937

Arrested in Vitebsk, was sentenced to death.

December 29, 1937

The sentence was carried out, the artist was shot in the basement of the UNKVD building in Vitebsk.

1958

Rehabilitated posthumously.
