Anna Sokolova works with space and context. For the screen at the Johannes-Rau-Haus, she reinterpreted her video BLACK-WHITE-BLACK CIRCUIT and made a condensed version of it.
BLACK-WHITE-BLACK refers to no country; it is the artist’s flag. It appears as the result of transformation of her video LINEMENT into a three-dimensional physical object. A still from the video LINEMENT, in which a stripe of light moves against a black background, becomes the BLACK-WHITE-BLACK flag. Anna Sokolova takes this flag in 2012 for her BLACK-WHITE-BLACK MANIFEST and raises it on the flagpole of the NRW-Forum in Düsseldorf as part of her lecture VIDEO-OBJECT-VIDEO.
In BLACK-WHITE-BLACK CIRCUIT, the motif of the flag, LINEMENT, returns to the medium of video, but the movement of the stripe here has a different nature. The wind, the driving force on the other side of the screen, enters into a dialogue with the constant wind on the Rhineknie Bridge.
The wind blows the flag, turning the stripe into a wave and the flag itself into aesthetic material, which, in this new role, is re-ideologized by the artist into a manifestation of her own artistic autonomy.
