Illumination: Between Bears, Hats, Fruits, Octopus and Hedgehogs

Uladzimir Hramovich 2023
Acrylic, 800 x 300 cm

Taking the logo of the Belarusian Soviet satirical magazine "Vozhyk" (Hedgehog) as a basis, I "roll" it, gluing various narratives and stories onto its needles. In the new version of the work, I contrast old caricatures of the 19th-20th centuries, representing the unchanging "alphabet" of political imagination, showing how some images (of the country) may not change for centuries, but at the same time how the hedgehog becomes an anti-tank hedgehog that continues to roll on the ground.

I used the basic colors of the miniatures of the Reims Gospel - brown, green, blue - and "increased" these colors from miniatures to monumental painting, like magazine cartoons to fresco. In essence, connecting two stories and meanings of the word illumino, which in different periods of history meant completely different things, from a miniature to a gigantic luminous destruction.

Work from the group exhibition "L'horloge à répétition" ("Repeating Clock"). The Left Place, The Right Place. Reims, France. 2023
