Marc Klionsky

1927 – 2017

Jewish artist, painter, graphic artist, representative of the Leningrad school of painting, became famous as a master of American realism. Specialized in official portraits of famous political, cultural and religious figures, as well as on the subject of the Holocaust.

Mark Klionsky's works are in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in Switzerland, the Yad Vashem Museum of Art in Jerusalem, as well as the State Hermitage Museum and the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, as well as private and public collections throughout the world.

Born in Minsk into a Jewish family of a printer (USSR, now the Republic of Belarus).

After the start of the Great Patriotic War, Klionsky and his parents evacuated to Kazan. He participated in the production of political posters, created illustrations for local newspapers, and studied at the art studio at the Kazan Drama Theater, where he primarily worked on developing costume sketches for various theater productions. After the war, the artist came to Leningrad to continue his education.

1951

Graduated from the Leningrad Art and Pedagogical College (now the St. Petersburg State Academy of Art and Industry named after A. L. Stieglitz). Entered the painting department of the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I. E. Repin (now the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts named after Ilya Repin).

Since 1951

He participated in Leningrad, republican and all-Union exhibitions, painted portraits, genre and historical paintings.

1957

He graduated from the institute in the workshop of B. V. Ioganson and received the title of artist of painting, presenting his diploma painting "After the Meeting".

1958

He was accepted as a member of the Leningrad Union of Artists. He worked with the Leningrad branch of the Art Fund of the RSFSR.

1974

Due to anti-Semitism in the USSR and restrictions on artistic freedom, he and his family left the USSR for permanent residence, first in Rome, then in New York, USA. He exhibited in prestigious American and European galleries.

1974

His first solo exhibition abroad was held in Paris.

1979

The first solo exhibition in New York took place at the Nakhamkin Gallery of Fine Arts on Madison Avenue.
