Faced with a new country and culture, the author of the project turns to a traditional ornament to ask: what exactly am I made of?
The work is based on a fragment of a carpet woven by the author's grandmother. This carpet, which occupies a central place in the installation, was an integral part of Catherine's childhood and has now become a way to reconnect with her family, childhood, and heritage.
The artist learned the art of embroidery from her mother. By piercing paper with a needle to create an ornament, she reflects on the tension in the relationship between mother and daughter, as well as a person and his homeland.
The exhibition also includes a photograph of her grandmother. When the author of the project left for Poland, she planned that the trip would be short-term, but she never managed to return to her homeland. In the meantime, her grandmother was diagnosed with cancer and died. The author was not able to say goodbye properly, which gives the work a sense of unfinished business.
As the project progresses, the author sees the ornamentation manifesting itself in the form of posters or stickers in her new city. It is a way to mark a space and make it a little more her own.
