Osip Zadkin (Ossip Zadkine)

1890 – 1967

Avant-garde sculptor, draftsman, engraver, illustrator, poet and memoirist.

He successfully used the techniques of cubism, expressionism, surrealism in combination with various historical styles in his work. But the combination of cubism and primitivism became an individual creative style. The artist used a variety of materials, often in combinations: marble and limestone, wood and mother-of-pearl, alabaster and crystal, and sculpture, as a rule, prevailed over modeling. In the late works of Zadkine, an inclination towards classicism manifested itself; he performed a number of sculptures based on ancient subjects.

Lived and worked in France.

  • The artist about his practice:

  • "... Those who wrote in the twenties that I "found" myself make me smile today. I must confess that I never found myself, and, most likely, it was the constant search that aroused in me an obsession that never left me and which is easy to find in each of my wooden or stone works ... "
