Leon Bakst

Artist, master of easel painting and theatrical graphics, member of the "World of Art" association and Sergei Diaghilev's theatrical and artistic projects.

One of the legislators of European fashion for exoticism and orientalism at the beginning of the 20th century. Bakst had a great influence on the fashion of that time, creating drawings of fabrics and models of costumes. A native of Grodno is famous primarily for his scenery and costumes for ballet productions of "Russian Seasons" by Sergei Diaghilev. Born in the city of Grodno (Russian Empire, today the Republic of Belarus) in a wealthy Jewish family.

1883

He entered the Imperial Academy of Arts as a volunteer, where he took all the courses, from drawings from plaster to field studies. Failed to complete the course.

1880-1890

He worked in St. Petersburg in the workshop of teaching aids, was engaged in book illustration, made reporter's sketches for the magazines "Artist" and "Petersburg Life". He created genre and religious works , marked by the influence of critical realism.

1893

Bakst went to Paris , where he studied at the famous Academie Julian and the studio of the famous artist Jean-Leon Gerome.

1898

Became a member of the association "Neva Pickwickians", later renamed "World of Art" , actively participated in the design of the magazine with the same name.

1900s

He is engaged in easel painting and graphics , using the experience of various artistic movements - from salon academism to fauvism. He created portraits of his contemporaries, narrative paintings, landscapes and decorative panels.
