Installation

The installation is a kind of composition of elements of space and (or) things, united by a common theme. The idea and impact is considered more important than the quality of the artwork. The installation is three-dimensional, which means that the audience's sense of touch, hearing, smell and vision are involved in the viewing. All this makes it possible to involve the viewer more deeply, to draw his/her attention to the problem raised by the artist, to convey experience. This is the main purpose of the installation. The installation artist bases her work on associative and emotional perception, strives to encourage the audience to critical and analytical thinking.

A wide range of materials and media, both natural and artificial, can be used in the creation of installation art. Often simple objects are played up and take on a new meaning. The advent of the Internet and performance has expanded the range of media (film, animation, various forms of photography, live performing arts (including events), sound and audio) and platforms (computer, electronic, web platform) for creating objects. Everything began to depend on the concept and purpose of the artist. Compositions may be closed or public, created in the open air or by projection, may require the participation of the audience.

Art installation “Vitrazh-AT” (2019) by Sergei Belooky, the main goal of which is to give the viewer the feeling of participating in the protest movement. The object consists of several mirror replicas of the anti-shock shield vitrazh-AO made on a 1:1 scale, used by special forces of various law enforcement agencies to protect against blows with stones, sticks, and a sledgehammer.

Mikhail Gulin, a representative of contemporary Belarusian art, is the author of the installation “Iona” (2021). An object in the center of Lublin (Poland) illustrates the digestive tract of a whale, reproduced to scale. The title and theme of the work directly refer to the biblical hero and his limitations and loneliness. The three-day action of the artist is associated with isolation during the pandemic, loneliness and seclusion, which in the case of Belarus was doubled by the totalitarian isolation of the entire state.

Installation “Cage” (2021, Vilyunus), the authors of which were students Yevgenia Kurlovich and Ksenia Lukashenya. The object was created in support of political prisoners in Belarus. The installation in the form of a cube measuring 3x3 meters illustrates the situation in Belarus, and about 500 pairs of shoes without laces suspended inside point to political prisoners. Two QR codes are glued to the sole of each pair with links to the pages of political prisoners with detailed information about each ( politzek.me website). Also, a record of all names is played inside the cube.

Other Belarusian representatives of installation art: Anna Sokolova, Zhanna Gladko, Sergei Shabokhin, Vika Mitrichenko, Alesya Zhitkevich and others.
