Before moving to Paris, Chagall studied at Yehuda Pen's studio in Vitebsk together with Ossip Zadkine and El Lissitzky. He later enrolled in Leon Bakst's school in Saint Petersburg. Marc Chagall and Vladimir Baranoff-Rossine, both from Russia, were neighbors in the leg-endary La Ruche studio building.
