Дзень Незалежнасці. Прамая трансляцыя.

Vladimir Parfenok 2009

The idea of the project is to record my complicated personal impressions on the very main state celebration named now as The Day of Independency. At the same time this day of the 3rd of July also known as The Day of the Republic and The Day of Liberation of Belarus from Fascist Occupants. The present Belarusian authorities are constantly playing with the names and dates of the State holidays due to manipulate with historical memory of Belarusian people.

Usually, the celebrations which the Belarusian president takes part in, are very officious and over-organized ones, so that ordinary people involved into events cannot express their wishes/emotions on their own. The same is with journalists and photographers, which should stay in a special zone for taking pictures of an event. Happily, the very main state celebrations always have live transmissions on the State TV channels. It gives a good chance to a viewer to see very different sites where an event is going on and to take photographs from a TV screen with any scenes and any people inside. Editors of any live transmission cannot physically control all details inside tv-frames, so one has a good chance to observe more or less realistic picture with high-hat persons. All strange details, scenes and personages usually are deleted later by editors for final tv-reportages.

I spent around 2 hours in front of my tv-set during live transmission of the celebration of The Day of Independence on the 3rd of July, 2009 taking photographs from the screen. The resulting work should look like a grid of 45 snapshots (size 14cm x 21cm each): 10 columns and 8 rows with some empty spaces. Distance between pictures is around 2cm. Total size are app. 130cm x 230cm. Pictures (digital ink prints) can be mounted directly to the wall without any frames.

First exhibited at National Ciurlionis Art Museum (Kaunas, Lithuanian Republic) during the 10th Month of Photography in Kaunas.
