Harvest of the Past

Aleksandra Kononchenko 2023
Belarusian newspapers, paint, paper, 2000 x 2852 mm, year indicated approximately

My artwork uses a Belarusian folk technique from between the First and Second World Wars, employing newspapers, paints, empty bullet shells for puncturing holes.

As a child, my family nurtured a small garden, carefully tending the trees, building supports for their branches, and whitewashing them to shield them from pests. This shared act of growing life from seed to harvest drew us closer together.

Now, I collect dreamlike fragments of the garden and my city, places I left behind years ago and can only revisit in my sleep.

Sketching and mapping these memories has become my way of preserving the past.
