TEMPORALITY

Nadya Sayapina 2022

TEMPORALITY is a continuation of the project "Letter to Mom" which deals with the stories of people who have been forced to leave their homes because of political persecution or war. It is based on interviews with Belarusian immigrants that the artist has been collecting since 2021. The project shows the emotional side of the experience of displacement: personal feelings, the sense of losing one's home, helplessness and confusion, fear, insecurity and guilt.

The new cycle TEMPORALITY refers to an object-symbol, reflecting the sense of temporality faced by people in a forced migration. Analysing collected interviews , posts comments found in social media, the artist turns to the recurring images that characterise a feeling of not accepting the new places, abandoning adaptation, waiting for the possibility to return.

Here familiar objects ceases to be a symbols of comfort, travel, discovery, pleasant memories. It becomes an image of unpleasant temporality and a frozen life that stands in a corner waiting.
