Treasures

Jana Shnipelson 2024
The "Treasures" project is a visual and emotional exploration of the inner worlds of Belarusians forced to flee their homeland following the events of 2020. Amid uncertainty and the search for a new place to live, the "Treasures" project seeks to preserve and convey the personal stories of those who found themselves far from their homeland in search of safety and freedom.

Selected events

The project is based on the concept of objects as bridges between the past and the present, between home and a new, unfamiliar place. Participants shared with us the objects most important to them—things they carefully packed in anticipation of an uncertain future and took with them. These objects were scanned in the packaging they were prepared for travel in—whether film, fabric, or a plastic bag.

Each scan is accompanied by a sheet of paper with a handwritten note from the owner, describing the significance of the item in their life. These stories are full of emotion, memory, and warmth, serving as living testaments to connections with people, significant moments from the past, family stories, and cherished memories.

The project currently includes 12 images, and work on it is ongoing. "Treasures" is a long-term project that will expand as new stories and objects are added. It shows how, despite difficulties, people find the strength to maintain their identity and connection to the past through the simplest yet most priceless things. Each story is unique: some feature memories of loved ones who are no longer around, others feature objects that were part of everyday life, or reminders of important periods in life and family left behind. These things help keep their owners from feeling lost, no matter where life takes them.
