Common Secret

Common Secret continues my research on intersubjectivity, one of the main highlights of phenomenological philosophy. In the video I return to the question of how can one comprehend the other’s subjective experience of the world.

As a part of a conceptual frame I use the reminiscence of a “Secret” game from my childhood, typically played in post-soviet countries. As many Belarusian children, I also made so-called secrets - hidden holes containing small founded “treasures”, buried in the soil and covered with glass. The ritual was performed in solitude - the purpose was for nobody to discover your secret, its transparency nevertheless implying an inbuilt intent to be revealed. This game for me plays the role of a key that opens up the number of essential themes for my research. Among the others: the idea of appresentation, dialectic of public and private, external and internal, interaction of an individual and a group.

Reconstruction of those publicly visible secrets interplays in my work with a reminder of common knowledge we tend to take for granted: we can never see into another person's mind, even of the closest one. By recollecting a game of the olden days, I reflect upon the paradoxical feature of human nature: the desire to both share and preserve, expose and hide. Given today's confused world, this work becomes a search for the transparency and access to the other.
