1872 – 1957

People's Artist of the BSSR and the RSFSR, full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR. Member of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions, the Union of Russian Artists. Developed the traditions of the Russian lyrical landscape of the late 19th century.

His paintings are kept in museums and private collections around the world, but most of them can be seen in the National Art Museum in Minsk.

Born in the village of Krynki , Belynichi district, Mogilev province (Russian Empire, today the city of Belynichi, Mogilev region, Republic of Belarus) in the family of a small tenant.

1885–1889

He studied at the Kiev Murashko Drawing School , later went to Moscow and entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture .

1897

He began to present his paintings at exhibitions of the Moscow Society of Art Lovers and the Moscow Association of Artists, at international exhibitions and competitions.

1901

The landscape "Eternal Snow" was awarded a gold medal.

1904

He was elected a member of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions.

1908

He was awarded the title of academician of painting . The artist also became a member of the Union of Russian Artists and the Kuindzhi Society of Artists.

1911

The painting "Hour of Silence" received two medals: an honorary one in Munich, a bronze one in Barcelona.

1917

He organized an art school for peasant children in the Tver province (now the Tver region, Russia). In painting, he continued to develop the traditions of impressionism.

1922

He became a member of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia .

1933–1937

He visited the Arctic, to which several series of the artist's landscapes are dedicated.

1937

He was awarded the title of "Honored Artist of the RSFSR" .

1944

Received the title of People's Artist of the BSSR .

1947

He was awarded the title of People's Artist of the RSFSR , was elected a full member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR. From May to mid-June he lived and worked at Belaya Dacha in the vicinity of Minsk. Here he painted several dozen sketches, which became the basis of a cycle of paintings dedicated to Belarus.

June 18, 1957

He died at his dacha "Seagull". He was buried in Moscow at the Novodevichy Cemetery.
