The museum is located in a mansion, where the Vitebsk Folk Art School founded by Marc Chagall worked in 1918–1923. The building is a historical and cultural monument of architecture of the early twentieth century.

The museum was opened on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the founding of VNHU. Museum visitors can get acquainted with the cultural life of Vitebsk in the late 19th - early 20th century, learn about the activities of VNHU and the creation of the UNOVIS creative association.

The reconstruction of the building was started in the year of the centenary since the construction of the building by the Vitebsk banker Israel Vishnyak.

The official opening of the Museum of the History of the Vitebsk Folk Art School (Mark Chagall St., 5a) in the building that housed the Vitebsk Folk Art School (VNHU) in 1918-1923.
