Born in Mitava, Russian Empire (now Jelgava, Lithuania).

Moved to Samogitia and lived in Žagary (Lithuania).
From 1799
He studied painting at the Vilna University under Francysk Smuglevich and Jan Rustem, after which he received a master's degree in fine arts.
1809—1820
He became a master of painting, began working at the Department of Painting at Vilna University. In parallel with his studies and work at the university, he was engaged in creativity.
February 1815 — June 1816
He was under investigation in a case initiated against Zeisik, accused of counterfeiting. Was delivered to Minsk.
August 15th, 1812
He took part in the design of the celebration in honor of Napoleon, which took place in Vilna.
1820—1822
He was sent into exile in Siberia. He lived in Tobolsk, during these years he visited Irkutsk, Tomsk, Yeniseisk. He painted Catholic churches in Siberia and painted Siberian landscapes.

After returning from exile, he lives in Minsk until his death.
August 30th, 1840
He died in Minsk, at the Minsk Kalvary cemetery. Instead of a monument, a painting "Prayer of the Savior" ("Prayer for the Cup") was hung over his grave, which the artist considered his best work.

An artistic envelope with the original stamp "225 years since the birth of Jan Damel" was issued in Belarus.
