Ruslan Vashkevych

1966

Artist, curator.

Creates rebellious statements, ironic and paradoxical works. He is skeptical towards the institutions of Belarusian art, as a result of which he creates actions and events that criticize the system. For example, at the end of the "Year of Culture" - as the state called 2016 - he, along with colleagues from the cultural sector, threw a party at the city dump (the "Northern Polygon" campaign). Often in his works he flirts with deliberately bad taste and kitsch, borrows images and codes from mass culture and folklore. Some of his works are built on an optical illusion and are associated with problems of optics and gaze.

As a curator, he organized and co-organized a number of important large-scale exhibitions: the Belarusian pavilion of the 53rd Venice Biennale, the art-analytical project "Zero Radius. Ontology of the 2000s", the critical-nostalgic-educational project "Parnat".
